by Devan Matthews Correspondent The Nordonia High School girls tennis team beat Laurel Aug. 23. However, the Knights then lost their next two matches. Nordonia beat Laurel by the score of 4-1. The Knights won all three of their singles matches, as Alyson Kavan (first singles), Kaylie Marr (second singles) and Sammi Mariglotta (third singles) were victorious. In addition, the second doubles team of Karly Huml and Stacy Stacy Danczak also won. Nordonia head coach Ryan Vehar was pleased with his team's performance in the victory. "We had beaten Ravenna the previous week to go 1-0, and after a tournament in between, it was good to get back to playing a regular match and to win it." On Aug. 25, Nordonia dropped a 4-1 decision to Medina. Registering the lone victory for the Knights was Marr at second singles. "Medina is a tough team," said Vehar. "They had a very good first singles girl that Alyson went up against. Sammi Miroglotta had a good match. She lost the first set, won the second, and lost the third. Medina's tough. We just didn't have enough." On Aug. 26, Nordonia battled Cuyahoga Falls. Unfortunately, the Knights fell to the Black Tigers by the score of 3-2. Kavan won at first singles, while Marr prevailed at second singles. According to Vehar, the loss was a disappointing one, since his team was in a position to win, but the Knights weren't able to pull it out. "We won first and second singles," he said. "We had a 4-3 lead in one of the matches later on, but they got the next three games and won the match. It was disappointing. We thought we had them there." With those two losses, Nordonia's overall record evened out at 2-2. The Knights have yet to play a match in the Lake Division of the Northeast Ohio Conference. On Aug. 30, the Knights battled Stronsgville at home. On Sept. 2, they travel to Normandy. E-mail: stowsports@recordpub.com Phone: 330-688-0088 ext. 3113 Comments
