by Jeff Saunders Reporter Macedonia — A bridge to be built over the Highland Road railroad tracks next year may be named in memory of a Nordonia High School student who was killed by a train at the crossing 21 years ago. City Council gave first reading Aug. 12 to a resolution that would name the bridge the “Dina Dlugoz Memorial Bridge.” Councilor Jan Tulley said Council plans to discuss the matter further. “The bridge isn’t happening tomorrow,” she said. Dlugoz’s parents, Valley View Road residents Ed and Barbara Dlugoz, were in the audience when the resoluion was introduced. Barbara Dlugoz told Council she is “so honored” that the city is considering the move. “And for those of you who were a part of this city 21 years ago, I thank you for your support,” she added. According to a 1989 report in the News Leader, Dlugoz, 18, had been a passenger in a car driven by an 18-year-old friend on April 6, 1989. The two had left school together that afternoon and were stopped behind a truck at the tracks while a southbound train passed. After the train passed, the two followed the truck ahead when it drove around the still-lowered gates. As their car crossed the tracks, it was struck by a southbound train, killing Dlugoz. The friend was injured, flown by helicopter to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, where days later she was listed in satisfactory condition. According to Mo Darwish, director of planning for GPD Group, the project’s engineering firm, construction of the $16-million bridge is expected to begin in spring 2011. The Ohio Department of Transportation is paying 95 percent of the cost while the city’s portion, about $800,000 in mostly engineering costs, has been paid over the last few years.
