Woman had nieces take items from store, police say

Macedonia — Police say they charged a Cleveland woman with several misdemeanor offenses after she allegedly took about $150 in merchandise from a Route 82 store Aug. 23 and had her 13- and 15-year-old nieces take some items, too.

According to Stow Municipal Court records, the 27-year-old woman pleaded not guilty to theft and possession of criminal tools, both first-degree misdemeanors. Police said the woman was also charged with two counts of first-degree misdemeanor contributing to the delinquency of a minor charges in Summit County Juvenile Court, which has jurisdiction for such charges. Police said the nieces were not charged.

According to a police report, a store employee reported the woman set off exit door alarms when she left the store. 

Police said they found the woman by her car when they arrived and with her consent, searched the car and found a number of pairs of shoes in the trunk that were allegedly taken from the store. Police said they also found a DVD and a pair of shoes in a bag on the back seat where the nieces were sitting. Police said the nieces admitted they took the items in the bag.

The woman was being held in Macedonia City Jail on a $1,000 bond as of Aug. 30.

Theft

Aug. 24. Man accused of taking clothing: An employee of a Route 82 store reported he saw a man putting an unspecified amount of men’s clothing into a bag, then set the exit doors alarm off as he walked out without paying for the merchandise. The employee said the man left in a vehicle. Police said they are investigating.

Aug. 21. Woman leaves clothing under vehicle: An employee of a Route 82 store reported a woman left the store without paying for about $148 in clothing in a shopping cart, setting off the exit door alarm as she departed. The employee said the woman refused to stop when the employee ordered her to, but placed the clothing under a vehicle in the store’s parking lot before getting into another vehicle and leaving.

Domestic violence

Aug. 23. Woman said boyfriend assaulted her: A 39-year-old city man pleaded not guilty to first-degree misdemeanor domestic violence at his Aug. 23 arraignment after the man’s girlfriend reported he allegedly pulled her out of bed by her ankles about 4 a.m., held her down on the floor and struck her in the mouth at the Macedonia home they share.

The woman also said that she bit the man’s arm to force him off of her, then tried to call 911 with a cell phone when he allegedly grabbed the phone away from her and pinned her to the bed. The woman said that she was able to convince him to let her leave the home after several minutes, after which she drove to a Route 82 service station and called police.

Police said the woman’s lip was bleeding and her thumb was swollen. Police said that after they arrested the man at his home, they found a bite mark on his arm.

The man was released from Macedonia City Jail on a personal bond Aug. 23.

Property damage

Aug. 22. Mailbox damaged: A Twinsburg Road man reported someone allegedly damaged his mailbox some time in the previous day.

 A woman reported someone allegedly cut her car’s convertible top while it was in the parking lot of a Highland Road hotel in the early evening. The woman said she did not know who might have done it.

Giving false information

Aug. 19. Man give false name: A North Carolina man, 34, pleaded guilty to giving police false information, a first-degree misdemeanor, Aug. 20 after police said he gave them a phony name while they were investigating a woman’s complaint he allegedly hit her while they were driving the day before. Police said the woman declined to press assault charges against the man and no injuries to the woman were reported.

Police said the woman called them to her home about 3 a.m. and they found the man standing on her driveway. 

Police said they questioned him and later determined that the man misidentified himself and they arrested him.

According to Stow Municipal Court records, the man was sentenced to 180 days in Macedonia City Jail, 175 of which were suspended, and fined him $1,000, $800 of which was suspended.

Theft

Aug. 18. Charges made against checking account: A Village Club Drive man reported someone charged purchases totaling about $207 against his checking account. Police said the matter is under investigation.

Property damage

Aug. 15. Scratches found on vehicle door: A Route 82 man reported he found someone left scratches on his vehicle’s door while it was in the parking lot of his apartment building during the night.

Operating a vehicle
under the influence

Aug. 13. Warrant issued for man’s arrest: Police charged a Cleveland man, 26, with operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and operating a vehicle without a valid driver’s license, both first-degree misdemeanors, and driving left of the center line, a minor misdemeanor, after they stopped him on Valley View Road at about 1 a.m. Police said they released him on a personal bond.

According to Stow Municipal Court records, the court issued a warrant for the man’s arrest Aug. 25 after he failed to appear at his arraignment.
