Macedonia -- What can a team do to boost its confidence in the early season?

Beating a returning Division I state semifinalist ranks near the top.

Nordonia showed they can play with anyone as they swept visiting Stow-Munroe Falls, 3-0 Sept. 2 by the scores of 25-22, 29-27 and 25-19.

The Lady Bulldogs (1-1, 0-0) got off to a good start as a tap from senior middle hitter/outside hitter Jacquelyn Close put the Maroon and Gold ahead 5-2 in set one.

However, Nordonia (2-0) rallied back like they did all evening long and led 21-18 as junior back row player Meagan Roberts recorded her third winner in a row with a kill from senior middle hitter Kerry Tuttle.

Stow got within two points at 21-19, 22-20, 23-21 and 24-22 before a Lady Bulldog mis-tap gave the Lady Knights set one.

Nordonia continued to play well in the second set and led 8-4 as junior outside hitter Amanda Wascovich served for a winner as Stow mis-hit.

Thanks to three winners in a row by senior outside hitter Jenna Chilinski, the Lady Bulldogs regrouped and led 16-14 as sophomore outside hitter Megan Garrison registered a bump on point 16 for Stow.

A kill from senior middle hitter Lauren Snyder gave the Lady Knights the lead back at 18-17 before a winner from Garrison with Nordonia in the net capped a 6-1 run for Stow as the visitors led again at 23-19.

However, a kill from junior outside hitter Kelsey Watroba and a pair of winners by sophomore middle hitter Jenna Huff brought the Lady Knights within a point at 23-22.

A Chilinski tap with a nifty assist to junior setter Kelly Vitt gave the Lady Bulldogs a 24-22 advantage.

But after set point for the Bulldogs, a kill by senior setter Sam Kaczmarek, a winner from Watroba on point 24 (a double block from Kaczmarek and Huff) and another winner by Watroba (a kill from Wascovich) put Nordonia ahead 25-24.

Stow then tied things at 25 (a kill by junior outside hitter/right side hitter Erin Mundorf), 26 (a Chilinski kill) and 27 (the Lady Knights had a serving error) before a "lift" on the Lady Bulldogs gave Nordonia its fourth set point at 28-27.

Wascovich then served and Stow was called for four hits to give the Lady Knights a 2-0 advantage in the match.

Nordonia led 5-1 in set three as Watroba registered a winner with a Tuttle kill before Stow fought back and knotted matters at at 11.

However, kills from Watroba on point 12 along with a kill by Tuttle on point 13 and a tap from Tuttle on point 14 helped the Lady Knights to a 15-11 lead. Watroba served for points 13-15 for Nordonia as the Lady Knights enjoyed a 4-0 run.

With the score tied at 17, the Lady Knights won the next six points to lead 23-17.

Wascovich served for points 19-23, including a kill on point 18 and an ace on point 19 while Watroba had kills on points 20 and 23.

Snyder added a kill on point 22 as Nordonia was just two points away from victory. Leading 24-18, a Watroba kill gave the Lady Knights the match.

"I have a lot of returning players and they have been working since January," Nordonia head coach Lori Snider said. "Things are starting to pay off for us. The difference was our mental toughness. We expect to win when we take the court."

Lady Bulldog head coach Miguel Ramirez was also pretty impressed by the Lady Knights effort.

"I give credit to Nordonia," Ramirez said. "That's some of the best defense I have ever seen. They played with tremendous energy. Our blocking and defense hurt us tonight."
