Police News: Man charged after police find loaded gun in car

June 18, 2008

Macedonia -- A 24-year-old Northfield Center man did not enter a plea in Cuyahoga Falls Municipal Court June 13 to two felony charges in connection with a loaded handgun police said they found in his vehicle during a traffic stop the day before.

In addition, the man pleaded not guilty to several misdemeanor counts police charged the man with following the stop.

The police report stated that while patrolling on June 12 at about 2:40 a.m., a city police officer stopped the man after seeing him turn onto Spring Hill Drive off Firestone Lane without using his turn signal. The officer said he smelled alcohol coming from the man's vehicle and that the man's eyes were red and glassy. After the man did poorly on the field sobriety test, he was placed under arrest, the report stated.

Police alleged that while they were putting handcuffs on the man, he admitted to having a loaded semi-automatic handgun and an extra loaded magazine in his vehicle, for which the man said he did not have a permit. Police said they found the gun and magazine.

Police alleged they also found five forged driver's licenses in his vehicle, plus a sixth forged license in the man's wallet. Police alleged the man told them he planned to sell the licenses for $100 each.

According to court records, police charged the man with carrying a concealed weapon and improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle, both fourth-degree felonies. The man is also facing first-degree misdemeanor charges of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, using weapons while intoxicated, forging identification cards, possessing forged identification cards and having a blood alcohol level over the legal limit, and a minor misdemeanor charge of failing to use turn signals.

The man was released from Macedonia City Jail on a personal bond and is scheduled for a June 24 pretrial hearing.
