Letter: Writer urges support for schools

June 25, 2008

In response to a June 18 letter in the News Leader, I strongly disagree with the writer's recommendation of voting down a possible upcoming Nordonia Schools levy and successive school levies.

A foundation for any community is the strength of its schools. There is a reciprocal nature that exists between the two and there are tremendous benefits (including higher property values) to living in a community supportive of its schools.

The writer suggests some teacher salaries are $80,000 per year. While the top of the pay scale likely reaches $80,000 for the most experienced, qualified teachers, the reality is the average salary of teachers is between $45,000 and $50,000.

It was reported last month that Nordonia bought out 27 teachers, replacing them with less expensive/experienced teachers. This makes sense financially, but is a risk to the quality of instruction. Undoubtedly the district was responsible in replacing the teachers, however, the loss of 27 veteran teachers is an instructional risk in exchange for financial benefit.

The writer also mentions the reality of $4.15 gas and increasing food prices. The school system is no exception to this pinch, as the district must transport and feed thousands of students. Diesel prices for buses are higher than $4.15, and the schools are not exempt from food and supply prices, either.

It is not Nordonia's fault for the manner that Ohio funds its public schools. In order to operate, districts are forced to ask citizens to raise their own taxes, as state and federal money districts receive are only a fraction of the amount needed to operate.

I will be supporting school levies by Nordonia. I view supporting school levies as an investment with the schools, yielding higher property values, but more importantly, a stronger community in which to live.
