Police News: Woman reports $2,999 scammed

Macedonia -- A city woman reported Sept. 29 she was cheated out of nearly $3,000.

The woman said she received a letter informing her that she had won a $39,000 home improvement grant from a Texas company.

The letter included a check for $4,680 and she was instructed to deposit it into her checking account and wire the company $2,999 to pay for fees and taxes required by law.

The woman said she did that on Sept. 24, then was informed by her bank that the check was fraudulent.

Police are investigating.

Theft

Sept. 29. Charge made to credit card: A city woman reported discovering that someone used her credit card information to make a $1,045 purchase from an Arizona-based nutrition products company. The woman said the credit card issuer dismissed the charge.

Sept. 27. Motorcycle missing: The owner of a South Freeway Drive business reported someone took his daughter's $7,000 motorcycle from inside the business during the night.

The man said the motorcycle had been stored at the business for three months while he was trying to sell it. He said the doors were locked, and police said there was no sign of forced entry. Police listed the motorcycle as missing in a law enforcement database.

Sept. 24. Two men take digital camera: An employee of a Macedonia Commons Boulevard business reported he saw two men take a digital camera and a memory card, totaling $260 in value, out of their packaging and hide them in their clothing. The employee said the men eluded him inside the store and got away.

Sept. 22. Woman's Stolen checks used to make purchases: A Stark County woman reported someone used three checks that had been stolen from her to make purchases totaling about $336 at a Route 82 and a Macedonia Commons Boulevard business in the previous few days.

The woman said she did not know how or when the checks were stolen. The matter is under investigation.

Property damage

Sept. 27. Administrator finds graffiti on school doors: A Nordonia High School administrator reported someone spray-painted an obscenity on the school's front doors during the night. Police said school security video showed an unidentified person walking toward the doors at a little after 1 a.m. A damage estimate was not included in a police report.

Sept. 20. Neighbors report related vandalism: Two Berkshire Drive men reported someone damaged their property in related incidents during the night.

One man reported that someone broke the wheels off one of his trash cans and put it by his front door, and knocked a second can over by the side of the house. The man also said that two plastic patio end tables were destroyed and dumped onto a neighbor's property. The neighbor reported one of the tables was thrown against his garage door, damaging the door and frame.

Theft

Oct. 4. Employee allegedly takes gift cards: A 25-year-old Cuyahoga Falls woman was charged with first-degree-misdemeanor theft after she allegedly took nine gift cards valued at about $250 in the previous two weeks at a Golden Link Boulevard business where she worked.

The woman was given an Oct. 20 Cuyahoga Falls Municipal Court date and released.

Sept. 26. Girl allegedly took money at school: A Sagamore Hills girl, 13, was charged in Summit County Juvenile Court with first-degree misdemeanor theft after a Nordonia Middle School administrator reported that the girl had taken $50 from another student's purse several days earlier. The girl was taken to the Summit County Juvenile Detention Center.

Property damage

Sept. 30. Someone shoots arrow at home: A Marwyck Drive man reported someone shot a crossbow arrow into one of his home's shutters in the evening. A police report did not include a damage estimate. Police said there are no suspects.
