Before capturing the Northeast Ohio Conference championship, the Nordonia High School boys and girls swimming teams knocked off conference counterpart Brush at home and participated in the Barberton Invitational at the University of Akron.
The Brush meet was Jan. 22. The Nordonia boys beat the Arcs by the score of 106-80, and the girls posted a 135-44 triumph.
Senior Ryan Dengate finished first in two individual events for the Knights. Those events were the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.85 and the 100 breaststroke with an effort of 1:09.80.
A number of other boys placed first for Nordonia. They included junior Bryan Gerber in the 200 freestyle (2:00.84), junior David Tanczos in the 200 individual medley (2:19.79), junior Sean Tyrrell in one-meter diving (245.78), freshman Zach Zuercher in the 100 butterfly (1:03.50) and junior Kamyar Sadegi in the 100 freestyle (54.54).
The Knights' 200 freestyle relay team also finished in first place, posting a time of 1:37.09 in the process. The members of that unit were Dengate, junior Sean VanBuskirk, Gerber and Sadegi.
For the girls, sophomore Jamie Wlosowicz captured a pair of individual events--the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:30.49 and the 100 butterfly with an effort of 1:10.08.
Junior Allie Toaz also claimed a pair of events for Nordonia. Those events were the 100 freestyle (1:01.90) and the 100 backstroke (1:12.61).
Four other girls finished first in individual events. They were junior Carly Dean in the 200 freestyle (2:13.31), freshman Emma Toaz in the 50 freestyle (28.36), senior Breanne Horrigan in one-meter diving (236.10) and junior Mariel Gerry in the 500 freestyle (6:18.37).
By virtue of her performance, Horrigan broke the school record for points scored in six dives.
The Nordonia girls' 200 freestyle relay team captured first place, as well. That squad, which contained Gerry, freshman Jill Grell, senior Lacey Nichols and junior Alyssa Jaskiel, finished with a winning time of 1:57.88.
That was one of three relay units that placed first for the Knights. The 200 medley team also did so, posting an effort of 2:04.60. The members of that squad were Emma Toaz, Allie Toaz, Wlosowicz and senior Jessie Moosbrugger.
Last but not least, the Nordonia girls' 400 freestyle relay unit claimed first place (4:19.21). Among the members of that team were Moosbrugger, Nichols, Gerry and Wlosowicz.
Meanwhile, two individuals and one relay team set new school records at the Barberton Invitational.
The relay squad was the girls' 200 freestyle unit of Wlosowicz, Emma Toaz, Moosbrugger and senior Savannah Collins. That team set a new mark with a time of 1:47.63.
Emma Toaz also broke a school record in an individual event, doing so in the 100 backstroke with an effort of 1:07.62.
In addition, Zuercher set a new standard in the 100 backstroke on the boys' side, posting a time of 1:02.74.
