Macedonia Deserves Better
May 19, 2010
The residents of Macedonia are intelligent and caring. I am constantly reminded of how fortunate my family is to be surrounded by such neighbors. However, I don't think our Council views us the same way. I think they believe we are incapable of understanding strategic investment versus tactical fiscal management. I believe Council's latest disregard for the strategic well-being of the community came at its May 13 worksession. One elected official said -- in response to whether anything should be presented to the residents to rescue the city in August or November -- "A resounding 'no' ... voters don't understand the difference between a renewal versus replacement levy." The other Council members quickly followed his lead because I believe they also bring no solutions and were intimidated by his bravado. The Councilman followed his belittling statement with, "The voters have spoken." I was caught between laughter and disgust. The way I see it, our elected officials agreed to bring no solutions to us to vote upon. They agreed to do nothing. I feel this is terrible leadership on so many levels. Let me restate my view of Council's position: "There is no need for us to collaborate and communicate how to mitigate the risk of further deteriorating. Our voters are not savvy enough to understand our ideas anyway." Could they work together to support any proposal? Watch Council in action. In my opinion, it's too conflicted/intimidated to voice an opinion; too under-informed to articulate viable solutions. Council is keeping information from the voters that will help us make informed decisions. I could speculate why, but I'll leave it at apathy. Now, we are left alone to decipher this convoluted situation. I recently performed a study that suggests Macedonia is moving in the wrong direction. It's something I believe all residents should see.
