AKRON Summa Health officials and a variety of guests broke ground on the new West Tower at the health provider's East Market Street Akron campus May 15.

The tower is the initial step in Summa's $270 million Phase I facility plan announced last year.

According to officials, Summa plans to invest up to $350 million throughout all phases of the project over the next six to seven years.

"Summa is an extraordinary part of the lifeblood of this community," Summit County Executive Ilene Shapiro said. "It's part of the flow and the momentum that gives life to growth, goals, and achievements in our economy and public health."

The tower is scheduled to be completed in the spring of 2019 and feature private patient rooms; expanded surgery suites and patient prep and recovery room; two floors dedicated solely to women's health; a breast center; a multi-purpose conference center; a large covered canopy area for drop-off with dedicated valet services; and a bridge to the adjoining Adolph parking garage, according to Summa.

No existing buildings are being closed as a result of this construction, said Jim Gosky, senior public relations strategist for Summa Health. There will be six stories total in the new tower.

The exterior front of the new tower will be a modern style, featuring mainly glass and textured gray metal panels, according to Summa.

The back of the structure blends the hospital's past with the future, using some terra cotta brick that is seen on many of the existing older buildings on Summa's Akron campus.

Several other officials were on-hand at the May 15 groundbreaking including Summa Health Board Chair James McIlvaine, Interim President and Chief Executive Officer Cliff Deveny and Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan. The Rev. Carl Wallace gave the invocation.

Summa Health is one of the largest integrated healthcare delivery systems in Ohio. Summa includes a network of hospitals, community health centers, a health plan, a physician-hospital organization, a multi-specialty physician organization, research and the Summa Health Foundation.
