It's been a busy early part of the season for the Nordonia High School boys and girls bowling teams.

Nordonia hosted its first-ever tournament Dec. 9 at Roseland Lanes, called the Nordonia Knights Classic. A total of 29 teams competed in the tournament.

The Nordonia boys finished in fourth place, while the girls squad placed sixth.

Senior Nick Vanni produced both the high game and high series for the Knights, rolling a 242 and 612, respectively. In addition, senior Nick Higginbotham contributed a 545 series to Nordonia's efforts.

For the Lady Knights, junior Dominique Diblasi posted a 523 series and a 212 game, while junior Marisa Rittenberger rolled a 517 series.

Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin won the tournament for the boys. Green was the winner on the girls' side.

"For our first tournament, it was a good one," said Nordonia head coach Bob Glontz. "Everything worked out well."

Nordonia also competed in the Lake Blue Streaks Invitational Dec. 8 at Eastgate Lanes in Akron.

The Lady Knights finished first at that tournament, while the Knights placed second.

The Nordonia boys posted a team score of 2,980. Sophomore Ryan Liederbach bowled a two-game series of 412. Vanni produced the high game with a 226.

Nordonia also battled Akron East at Roseland Dec. 6.

The Knights won easily by the score of 2,553-1,927. Liederbach rolled the high series with a 457, while Vanni was right behind him with a 456.

Vanni also accounted for his team's high game, rolling a 247.

The Lady Knights were victorious, as well, winning by a wide 1,889-1,495 margin.

Rittenberger contributed both the high series and the high game for the Nordonia girls. She rolled a two-game series of 339 and an individual game of 174.

Nordonia's junior varsity boys team also won, posting a 1,576-919 triumph. Leading the way for the Knights was freshman Mike Hirsch, who had the high game with a 157.

Glontz indicated that he's pleased with the teams' efforts at the start of the 2012-13 campaign.

"We've done a lot of bowling so far, and the kids are doing well," said Glontz. "Although we're not as strong of a team as last year, we're bowling just as well as last year.

"We are a little inexperienced; we've had some errant throws on the first ball. The kids just need more practice and more experience, and they'll get that."

On Dec. 10, Nordonia was set to travel to face Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary, but results were not available at press time.

On Dec. 17, the Knights and Lady Knights will host Akron Ellet at Roseland.
