Knight boys roll though league foes

So far this season, the Nordonia High School boys basketball team has established itself as a force to be reckoned with in the Suburban League.

The Knights won another pair of league games last week, knocking off both Cloverleaf and Wadsworth. With the wins, they improved their overall record to 4-1 and their conference ledger to 3-0.

Nordonia beat the Colts at home by the score of 82-54 Dec. 11. The Knights led 17-9 after the first quarter before scoring 31 points in the second period and 28 more in the third stanza to put the contest away.

"It was an impressive game," said Nordonia head coach Matt Cash. "The kids played hard and rebounded well after their loss to Lake the previous weekend."

Senior center Chris Scott led the way for the Knights, posting 25 points, 16 rebounds and five blocked shots.

In addition, sophomore point guard Max Hartman produced 22 points on the strength of 6-of-7 shooting from behind the three-point arc, senior shooting guard Nick Piotrowski tallied 13 points and four rebounds and sophomore forward Diallo Niamke scored 12 points and pulled down nine boards.

Others who scored for Nordonia included senior guard Kenny Kitchen with seven points and senior power forward Eugene Coleman with three points.

"We pushed the ball up the floor and played hard the entire game," said Cash. "Every team has played zone defense against us, but we beat the zone by running the floor."

Nordonia then downed Wadsworth by the score of 59-46 on the road Dec. 14.

According to Cash, the win against the Grizzlies was more of a grinding victory.

"Wadsworth has pressed in every game they've played this season, but they played a 2-3 zone against us and put a guy behind Chris Scott," said Cash. "That caught us off-guard. We were hoping they would press and run, but they didn't. Their coaching staff did a good job.

"We only scored 10 points in the first quarter, but then we put it together in the second and third quarters. We outscored them 22-12 in the third quarter, and that helped put it away."

Scott produced a double-double, pouring in 14 points and collecting 14 rebounds, while Piotrowski led the Knights in scoring with 16 points. He also dished out three assists, grabbed three rebounds and notched three steals.

In addition, Coleman contributed seven points and seven rebounds, and Hartman also had seven points.

"We played nine guys, and almost all of them scored," said Cash. "It was a great atmosphere, too, playing in Wadsworth's new gym."

Nordonia was set to host league foe Tallmadge Dec. 18, but results were not available at press time.

On Dec. 21, the Knights will travel to conference counterpart Highland. Varsity tip time is set for 7:30 p.m.

"Highland is playing extremely well right now," said Cash. "They have to be considered one of the favorites in the Suburban League, along with Green."
