Knights wrestling coach Audie Atienza admitted the field of team at this year's Nordonia Duals may not have been as strong as he would have wanted.
He made it clear, though, that was no reason for slacking off.
"You can't take a match off at all," Atienza said. "When you have a dual meet, you can't do that. In five dual meets, maybe you're wrestling the other team's best guy every match. You could have a long day ahead of you."
The Knights did not slack off. Rather, they dominated their five opponents.
Nordonia defeated Valley Forge 71-6, North Olmsted 54-21, University School 67-6, Bedford 42-26 and Eastlake North 43-18 to sweep the duals Dec. 22.
Nordonia's dual meet record improved to 9-0 heading into 2013.
"I think we did well," Atienza said. "We didn't have the teams that we necessarily wanted to have there. Every team had at least one or two good guys, though.
Atienza said most of his wrestlers had at least one forfeit victory. In fact, he noted 113-pounder Andrew Coghill wrestled only one match due to forfeits.
Because of that, Nordonia had only one wrestler who went 5-0 in wrestled matches on the day.
Junior 138-pounder Mike DeCesare finished with three pins and two technical falls Dec. 22.
"He almost maxed out the points in his matches, so that was good to see," Atienza said.
Atienza said the duals were "grueling" for some of his wrestlers.
The Knights were set to participate at the Brecksville Holiday Invitational Tournament Dec. 28 and 29, but results were not available at press time.
Atienza said the Knights were not going to be full strength heading into Brecksville, as senior 170-pounder Tyler McCann was dealing with an internal injury. Atienza said there is no timetable for his return.
"Every kid is important to us," Atienza said. "Everybody else is very healthy. The mentality we take it into [Brecksville] is the first round is going to be hard. We just have to wrestle our best and whatever happens happens."
Nordonia will open 2013 at the Hudson Duals Jan. 5. First match is scheduled for 10 a.m.
