The Nordonia High School ice hockey team celebrated Senior Night this past weekend, honoring the squad's four seniors prior to its game against Canfield.
The Knights battled the Cardinals Jan. 13 on home ice at Gilmour Academy. Canfield ultimately posted a 2-0 victory over Nordonia.
The four seniors who were honored included forward Matt Kobus, defender Luke Mayer, forward Brandon Ciresi and forward Ryan Schron.
Nordonia head coach Joe Kramp praised his seniors for their performance this season and for their contributions to the program overall.
"They've each contributed quite a bit to the team this year," said Kramp, "and they've been playing for just a short period of time. I would have liked to have them on the team when they were freshmen, but as it is, they've done a great job."
According to Kramp, the Knights played well against Canfield, but they weren't able to do enough to crack the scoreboard.
"We had several chances, but we just couldn't get the puck in the net," Kramp said.
On Jan. 12, Nordonia dropped a 9-1 decision to West Geauga at home. Kramp indicated that it took a little while for the Knights to get going in that contest.
"We didn't start really playing until halfway through the second period," he said. "We need to start playing hockey right from the start, which is what we did against Canfield."
One of the players Kramp lauded for their play in recent weeks is freshman goalie Justin Post.
"He's doing a heck of a job," said Kramp. "He's been seeing 40 to 50 shots every game, and he's been keeping us in a lot of those games."
According to Kramp, the Knights are continuing to make strides overall.
"We're starting to do a lot of the little things right," he said. "A lot of times, the speed of play is a little faster, and the kids have a hard time adjusting. A lot of our kids are young. They just have to stay with it, and a couple of years down the road, we'll be strong again."
This coming weekend, Nordonia will compete in the Parma Martin Luther King Tournament. The Knights have games scheduled for Jan. 19, 20 and 22.
