Zuercher shines for Nordonia swimming at league meet

This past Friday was a big day for senior Zach Zuercher and the rest of the Nordonia High School swimming and diving team.

By virtue of his performance at the Suburban League Meet, Zuercher became the only male swimmer to be named first team all-league in four events. Those events were the 200 freestyle, the 500 freestyle, the 200 freestyle relay and the 400 freestyle relay.

As if that wasn't enough, Zuercher also set a new school record in the 500 freestyle, finishing with a time of 5:06.55.

"Our league does not name a MVP in any sport," said Nordonia head coach Claudio Costanzo. "If we did, it would be hard for anyone to make a case against Zach's overall performance [at the league meet]."

The Nordonia boys finished second overall with 224 points. Copley captured first place by scoring 283 points.

The Nordonia girls, meanwhile, placed third with a total of 184 points. Green claimed first place on the girls' side, compiling 298 points.

All-Suburban League honors are traditionally determined by the results of the league meet. As such, first place corresponds to first team all-league, second place is second team all-league and third and fourth places both represent honorable mention all-league.

Sophomore Jarod Riedel was close on Zuercher's heels, earning first team honors in three events (100, 200 freestyle relay and 400 freestyle relay) and second team in one event (50 freestyle).

Sophomore Andrew Grell earned first team status in the 200 freestyle relay and the 400 freestyle relay, and he also gained honorable mention in the 200 and 100 breaststroke.

Senior Phil Rinehardt earned first team honors with both the 200 freestyle relay team and 400 freestyle relay team, and he was also a second team winner in the 100 fly.

A number of Lady Knights also garnered all-league honors for their performance.

Sophomore Jenna Dasher captured first place in the 100 backstroke and second place in the 100 fly. She also earned second team all-league status for the 400 freestyle relay and honorable mention for the 200 freestyle relay.

Senior Emma Toaz garnered second team all-league accolades in two events (100 backstroke, 400 freestyle relay) and honorable mention status in two events (200 individual medley, 200 freestyle relay).

In addition, senior Jill Grell was second team all-league for her participation on the 400 freestyle relay team. She also earned honorable mention laurels in the 200, the 500 freestyle and the 200 freestyle relay.

Sophomore Soraya Sadegi earned second team all-league status as a member of the Lady Knights' 400 freestyle relay squad, and she was also honorable mention on 200 freestyle relay unit.

"The coaches and I were extremely pleased with the way everybody performed," said Costanzo. "Many of the kids exceeded our expectations, and they should be proud.

"There were a lot of great swims. Some of them were on the verge of possibly making the district meet. If we can stay focused and maintain discipline for the next few weeks, it could turn out to be an exciting month of February."

On Feb. 1, Nordonia will visit North for a dual meet at 6 p.m.
