The Nordonia High School boys and girls swimming and diving teams had high hopes entering the Division I Sectional Meet this past weekend.
Those high hopes were rewarded, as a number of Knights and Lady Knights qualified for the district meet.
Among those who qualified were junior Stephen Romanik and senior David Williams in one-meter diving. As a bonus, Romanik broke the school record with a score of 527.6 to win the sectional title and advance to districts.
In addition, the boys medley relay unit qualified. The members of that squad were senior Cory krusinski, junior john edwards, sophomore patrick rinehardt and senior liam vanbuskirk.
also qualifying was the knights' 400 freestyle relay team comprised of sophomore jarod riedel, senior zach zuercher, sophomore andrew grell and senior phil rinehardt.
not only did zuercher and riedel advance to the district meet as part of a relay team, but they each also advanced in a pair of individual events.
zuercher's events were the 100 freestyle and the 200 freestyle. for riedel, the events were the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle.
three other nordonia boys qualified in individual events. they were grell in the 200 freestyle, krusinski in the 200 individual medley and phil rinehardt in the 100 fly.
however, the nordonia girls were busy qualifying a bunch of swimmers to the district meet, as well, starting with the 400 freestyle relay squad.
That relay team consisted of senior Jill grell, sophomore Jenna Dasher, senior Emma Toaz and sophomore Soraya Sadegi.
The Lady Knights also boasted a few stellar performances on an individual basis. Leading the way in that category was Jill Grell.
She not only advanced to the district meet in both the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle, but she also did so by breaking the school record in the latter event.
Two other Lady Knights qualified for districts in not one, but two individual events.
One of those athletes was Toaz in both the 200 individual medley and the 100 backstroke, while the other was Dasher in the 100 fly and the 100 backstroke.
According to Nordonia head coach Claudio Costanzo, the Knights and Lady Knights have been slowly building to this point throughout the season. He's hopeful that they can continue to improve in preparation for the upcoming district meet.
"This was another exciting weekend of swimming," said Costanzo. "Once again, we had a very successful sectional meet. I'm excited for the week to come."
