The Nordonia High School boys and girls golf teams both closed out their 2016 seasons recently with participation in the Suburban League Tournament and the Division I Sectional Tournament.
On Sept. 28, the Lady Knights competed in the league tournament at Barberton Brookside Golf Club.
Nordonia finished sixth in a field of seven teams with a score of 405. Wadsworth was first with a round of 360, followed by Brecksville-Broadview Heights (365) and North Royalton (368).
Junior Delaney Monroe led the way for Nordonia with a round of 95, while senior Megan Ryan was next with a 99. Junior Sydney Vitt was right behind Ryan, shooting a 100, while junior Jenna Stephens carded a 111. Rounding out the scoring for the Lady Knights were senior Bella Zak (122) and junior Nicole Schmeiser (131).
Nordonia finished with an overall record of 4-8 and a mark of 2-5 in the National Conference of the Suburban League. The Lady Knights ended up sixth in the final conference standings with 20 points. Wadsworth is this year's conference champion with 67 points.
For her performance during the campaign, Ryan was named honorable mention all-conference.
Meanwhile, the Knights competed in the Suburban League Tournament Sept. 29, at J.E. Goodpark Golf Club in Akron.
Nordonia finished fifth in a field of eight teams with a score of 339. Hudson was first with a round of 321, winning a tiebreaker with Stow-Munroe Falls, which placed second. North Royalton was third with a score of 331.
Junior Drake Tobias paced Nordonia, shooting a round of 77, while junior Jake Vetrovsky was next with an 82. Rounding out the Knights' efforts were junior Mitch Ehrman (88), junior Jason Zaborski (92), senior Jared Budner (93), and sophomore Jon DePiero (94).
Nordonia finished with an overall record of 7-4 and a mark of 3-4 in the National Conference of the Suburban League. The Knights finished third in the final conference standings with 36 points. Hudson is this year's conference champion with 70 points.
"I'm really proud of my team," said Nordonia boys head coach Scott Lawrence. "Despite a ton of adversity, we finished third in the Suburban League, which is the highest finish for us since I took over three years ago."
Tobias was named first team all-conference, while Vetrovsky earned honorable mention status within the conference.
The girls sectional tournament took place Oct. 4 at Ellsworth Meadows. The top four teams and the top four individuals not part of a qualifying squad advanced to the regional round of competition.
The Lady Knights finished ninth in a field of 16 teams with a score of 426. Vitt led the way with a 98, and she was followed by Ryan (109), Zak (109), and junior Megan Garvey (110).
Walsh Jesuit captured the sectional title with a round of 329, while Solon was second with a 341. The other regional qualifiers were Hathaway Brown (343) and Brecksville-Broadview Heights (375).
The boys sectional tournament took place Oct. 5 at Windmill Lakes Golf Club. The Knights finished seventh in a field of 18 teams with a score of 331.
Tobias had the low score for Nordonia with an 80, and Budner was right behind him with an 81. In addition, senior Chris Armao shot an 83, Erhrman contributed an 87, and Vetrovsky accounted for a 91.
Walsh Jesuit claimed the sectional championship by shooting 307, edging Hudson (310). Also qualifying for regionals were North Royalton with a 316 and Brecksville-Broadview Heights with a 323.
