As coach Beau Polcen expected, Nordonia wrestling has taken its lumps during the early season, especially against Suburban League National Conference competition.
The Knights opened their National Conference schedule Dec. 15 at Brecksville-Broadview Heights and were left as cold as the December night. Nordonia lost 72-6 to the Bees and also lost to Hudson.
Nordonia then headed south Dec. 17 to participate in the Potter Classic Tri-State Tournament. This pool-style tournament was hosted by East Liverpool.
Nordonia has some success at East Liverpool, particularly from its main man.
The Knights finished eighth in the 16-team tournament with 106 points. Alliance won the tournament with 289 points, while Twinsburg was second with 223.5 points.
The Knights were led by senior 195-pounder Anthony Perrine, who continued his undefeated start to the season by capturing the title in his bracket.
Wrestling in pool C at 195, Perrine pinned Crestview's Danta Pelino in 2:17 and beat East Liverpool's Austin Mayfield 13-1 to win the pool.
In the semifinal, Perrine stuck Hope for Hyndman's Lee Moskey in 3:58. The final was a battle of All-Ohioans, as Perrine took on Smithville's John Kelbly. It was close, but Perrine pulled out at 3-2 win to take the title.
Nordonia also had senior 120-pounder Jimmy Brennenman reach the final. Wrestling in pool A, Brenneman pinned Smithville's Colton Beaver in 59 seconds and then upset top seeded Bryan Dawson of Hope 3-2.
In the bracket, Brenneman beat Crestview's Derek Houser 11-5 and Twinsburg's Brandon Callow 6-3 to reach the final.
In the final, however, Brenneman dropped a tight 7-5 decision to Alliance's Reese Wainuskis.
Nordonia also got fourth-place finishes from two sophomores, as 106-pounder Jake Hamad, 170-pounder Collin Flinn each took fourth. At 220 pounds, sophomore Ryan Lee took sixth.
Nordonia will next see action at the Brecksville Holiday Invitational Tournament Dec. 29 and 30. First match Dec. 29 is set for 11 a.m.
