With another victory in the Greater Cleveland High School Hockey League Blue South Division, the Nordonia High School ice hockey team is one step closer to the Baron Cup.

The Knights played a pair of games recently. On November 20, Nordonia hosted non-division opponent Aurora, which hails from the Blue North Division. The Knights fell to the Greenmen by the score of 8-1.

Senior Luke Friss scored the lone goal for Nordonia. It was an unassisted goal in the second period. In addition, junior goalkeeper Anthony Cinalli racked up 35 saves.

According to Nordonia head coach Rich Cinalli, speed was a factor in the loss to Aurora.

"The big thing was that we just could not keep up with their speed," said Cinalli of the Greenmen. "It was a non-division game, and I was proud of the way the guys performed. Then we took the speed from the Aurora game into the Garfield Heights game."

On Jan. 21, Nordonia clobbered division foe Garfield Heights by the score of 10-0 on the road.

Friss enjoyed a monster game for Nordonia, scoring three goals and racking up three assists. In addition, junior Tyler Justice had two goals and one assist and freshman Michael Savol produced a pair of goals.

Also accounting for Nordonia goals were senior Jeremy Adamcik, senior Brandon Bayus-Libby, and sophomore Andre Gay. It was the first goal for Gay in hit scholastic career.

Three other Knights notched assists in the victory. They were junior Brandon Mitchell, junior Zach Savol, and freshman Vince Costello. Cinalli had 20 saves in registering the shutout.

With the win over Garfield Heights, Nordonia improved its record in the Blue South Division to 5-3. According to coach Cinalli, the Knights are in a good position to qualify for the Baron Cup.

"We just need to keep the speed up with the way we've been playing," he said. "The lines have solidified themselves, and the seniors are really taking hold. Luke as the captain and Jeremy as the assistant captain are coming through. It's a great time to get that type of leadership from the two of them."

On Jan. 25, Nordonia will travel to Elyria Catholic. The following day, the Knights are scheduled to visit Brooklyn. On Jan. 28, Nordonia will hit the road once again, this time traveling to Lakewood. The Brooklyn and Lakewood games are both Blue South Division contests.

"This is a big week for us," said coach Cinalli. "We're in a good place right now as a team."

Nordonia's Annual Wing Ding Fundraiser is slated Feb. 25, at Scoreboards from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The cost of the fundraiser is $25. Those who are interested should contact Rosemarie Cinalli at 330-388-3294.
