Knight bowlers pick up steam as season winds down

Both the Nordonia High School boys and girls bowling teams have engaged in a flurry of activity recently, as the Knights and Lady Knights participated in multiple matches and tournaments.

On Jan. 20, Nordonia battled Suburban League rival Wadsworth on the road. The Lady Knights knocked off the Lady Grizzlies by the score of 2,014-1,990.

Senior Hannah Luketic led the way for Nordonia, rolling games of 178 and 167 for a 345 series. In addition, senior Morgan Rittenberger bowled games of 149 and 159 for a 308 series and freshman Kara Freyhauf had games of 134 and 158 for a 292 series. Also bowling for the Lady Knights were junior Kenzie Pitts (140-151 for a 291 series) and sophomore Samantha Lewis (130-152 for a 282 series).

The Nordonia boys, on the other hand, dropped a 2,523-2,462 decision to Wadsworth. Senior Conner Novak paced the Knights, posting a 406 series (games of 224 and 182).

In addition, senior Phil Toth rolled games of 215 and 176 for a 391 series, senior Alex Cunningham bowled games of 189 and 185 for a 374 series, and senior Nolan Postolka had games of 189 and 183 for a 372 series.

On Saturday, Jan. 21, the Nordonia girls competed in the Brush Invitational, finishing seventh overall. Freyhauf was also seventh individually, producing games of 214 and 169 for a 383 series.

On Friday, Jan. 27, the Nordonia boys and girls battled league adversary Kent Roosevelt on the road. The Knights emerged victorious, taming the Rough Riders by the score of 2,770-2,599.

Novak led the way for Nordonia, posting games of 222 and 247 for a 469 series. In addition, Toth totaled games of 222 and 243 for a 465 series. Other major contributors for the Knights were Cunningham with a 442 series (games of 228 and 214) and Postolka with a 436 series (games of 225 and 181).

The Lady Knights, on the other hand, lost a heartbreaker to Kent Roosevelt by the score of 2,102-2,086.

Freyhauf paced Nordonia with games of 190 and 215 for a 405 series, while Luketic posted games of 147 and 134 for a 281 series. Also bowling two games apiece were Pitts (146-129 for a 275 series) and Rittenberger (133-128 for a 261 series).

Contributing individual games for the Lady Knights were Lewis with a 203 and Kenzie Allen with a 137.

"We tied everything up in the eighth frame of the third and final Baker Game," said Nordonia girls coach Larry Strimple. "We lost the final Baker Game 148-142. We rallied, though. We were down by 101 pins after the first two regular games."

On Jan. 29, Nordonia participated in the Black and Gold Sectional Preview at Cloverleaf Lanes in Independence.

Postolka paced the boys with games of 208-184-194 for a 586 series, while Novak contributed games of 173-161-235 for a 569 series. In addition, Toth rolled games of 244-137-172 for a 553 series.

On the girls' side, Luketic led the way with games of 136-170-180 for a 486 series. For her efforts during the tournament, Luketic received a performance medal.

Freyhauf was next with a 424 series (134-157-133), while Rittenberger produced a 394 series (134-147-113). Lewis had games of 95-138-116 for a 349 series, and Pitts bowled two regular games of 118 and 129.

The Knights now own a record of 9-2, both overall and in the Suburban League. The Lady Knights are 5-5 overall and 4-5 in league play.

On Feb. 1, Nordonia battle league nemesis Barberton at Roseland Lanes.

On Feb. 11, the Knights and Lady Knights will compete in the Suburban League Postseason Tournament at Legend Lanes in Cuyahoga Falls.
