Knight boys swimming team pulls out thriller vs. Wester Reserve Academy

The Nordonia High School boys swimming team produced an exciting victory last week, as the Knights defeated Western Reserve Academy by a single point.

Both the Knights and Lady Knights battled WRA on the road Jan. 28. The Nordonia boys edged Western Reserve Academy by the score of 90-89. The Nordonia girls, on the other hand, fell to defeat by a slim 103-83 margin.

Three Nordonia boys finished first in individual events. They were junior Jared Toaz, sophomore Timmy Tomkovicz, and sophomore Dominic Dasher.

Toaz accomplished the feat in the 100 butterfly with a time of 58.35 and the 100 breaststroke with an effort of 1:04.60. Tomkovicz, meanwhile, captured both the 100 freestyle (54.01) and the 200 freestyle (1:58.19).

The two events that Dasher won were the 100 backstroke and the 200 individual medley. His time in the former was 1:02.20, while his effort in the latter was 2:18.35.

Junior Jared Schneider also finished first in an individual event, claiming the 50 freestyle in 25.29.

The Nordonia boys also finished first in two relay races. The Knights captured the 200 medley relay in 1:53.06 with a team of Schneider, junior Matt Crawford, Toaz, and Dasher. They also won the 400 freestyle event in 3:38.79 with a contingent of Tomkovicz, Crawford, Dasher, and Toaz.

On the girls' side, junior Christine McFarland captured a pair of individual events. She finished first in both the 100 butterfly (1:00.57) and the 200 individual medley (2:20.82).

Three other Lady Knights won individual events against WRA. They were junior Carmen Licht, senior Claudia Gillota, and sophomore Grace Coghill.

Licht won the 50 freestyle in 27.45, Gillota was victorious in the 100 breaststroke in 1:15.34, and Coghill captured first place in one-meter diving by posting a score of 174.30.

The Nordonia girls also won a relay event, the 400 freestyle, with a time of 4:01.79. That unit consisted of junior Amanda Westbrooks, junior Stephanie Schueren, Licht, and McFarland.

On Feb. 3, Nordonia is scheduled to host Painesville Riverside at the Macedonia Recreation Center. It will be Senior Night for the Knights and Lady Knights.

Nordonia's senior class for this season consists of four members. Those members include Sunny Starcher, Gillota, Tommy Koperna, and Walid Abuhashim.

The Division I sectional Meet is scheduled Feb. 11 at Ocasek Natatorium in Akron.
