With the sectional tournament looming on the horizon, the Nordonia High School boys and girls bowling teams have been preparing for postseason play. Last week, the Knights and Lady Knights played a dual match and competed in a tournament.
The dual match was against visiting Suburban League foe Barberton at Roseland Lanes Feb. 1. The Nordonia boys and girls were both victorious. The Knights posted a 2,244-1,718 win, while the Lady Knights prevailed by a 2,004-1,846 margin.
Senior Morgan Rittenberger boasted the high series for the Nordonia girls. She rolled games of 171 and 192 for a 363 series. Next was senior Hannah Luketic, who bowled games of 168 and 175 for a 343 series.
Also contributing for the Lady Knights were sophomore Samantha Lewis and freshman Kara Freyhauf. Lewis produced a 304 series (games of 111 and 193) and Freyhauf accounted for a 303 series (games of 131 and 172). In addition, junior Kenzie Pitts had a 284 series with games of 134 and 150.
According to Nordonia girls coach Larry Strimple, the Barberton victory represented a solid performance by his squad.
"It was really good," said Strimple. "The girls bowled well. We were at home, which always helps, but the girls made a lot of spares and some nice strikes."
Nordonia then hit the road Feb. 4, for the Struthers Super Bowl Blowout. It was a tournament in which teams bowled Baker Games only.
The Knights were seeded first in a field of 20 teams after the qualifying round. They eventually battled Struthers in the finals.
Nordonia lost the first game 187-184 before bouncing back to claim the second game 236-181. The third game was wrought with drama and tension, as the Wildcats edged the Knights by the score of 191-190 to win the tournament.
The Nordonia girls, on the other hand, placed 10th overall in a field of 15 teams. According to Strimple, the Lady Knights experienced difficulty picking up their spares.
"The girls had a rough way to go," he said. "They missed a lot of single and double-pin spares. There were a lot of good teams there that were also missing spares, though."
The Nordonia boys now own an overall record of 10-2, both overall and in the Suburban League. The Lady Knights are 6-5 overall and 5-5 in league play.
On Feb. 11, Nordonia will participate in the Suburban League Postseason Tournament at Legend Lanes.
The following week, the Knights and Lady Knights will compete in the Division I sectional tournament at Sky Lanes in Garrettsville.
