Knight girls rebound from tough one

A poor start contributed to a heartbreaking loss for the Nordonia High School girls basketball team recently, as the Lady Knights fell to Suburban League National Division foe North Royalton 59-58 at home Feb. 1.

North Royalton led 19-9 at the end of the opening period.

Both squads scored 16 points in the second stanza, as the Lady Bears took a 35-25 advantage into the locker room at intermission.

Nordonia cut further into their deficit, outscoring North Royalton 17-14 in the third quarter. The Knights closed the gap further in the fourth frame, but was not able to close it completely.

Sophomore guard Soleil Barnes enjoyed a huge game for Nordonia, scoring 26 points, including three three-pointers. Freshman guard Lizzie Imrie was also in double digits with 10 points, while junior guards Lexi Maciejowski and Ariyaun Robinson both contributed six points.

Also cracking the scoring column for the Lady Knights were senior guard Sarah Turley with five points, junior guard Sandra Spellman with three points, and freshman guard Dominique Evans with two markers. Turley and Spellman also nailed three-pointers.

North Royalton hit 24 field goals, as opposed to 23 for Nordonia. The Lady Bears also hit one more free throw than the Lady Knights (8-7).

On Feb. 4, Nordonia hosted Revere, which hails from the American Division of the Suburban League.

The Lady Knights bounced back from their loss to North Royalton, thrashing the Lady Minutemen by the score of 47-28.

The score was tied 7-7 at the end of the first quarter.

Nordonia then doubled up Revere 14-7 during the second stanza, giving the Lady Knights a 21-13 advantage at intermission.

Nordonia continued to stretch its lead in the second half. The Lady Knights outscored the Lady Minutemen 12-8 in the third quarter and 14-7 during the fourth frame.

Two Nordonia players reached double figures in scoring.

They were Turley with 22 points and Spellman with 14 markers.

In addition, Barnes and junior forward Jordan Zambach both tallied four points. Evans contributed two points and Robinson added one point.

Nordonia outshot Revere from the field. The Lady Knights knocked down 21 field goals, as compared to 10 for the Lady Minutemen.

Nordonia also made a total of four three-pointers, as Turley and Spellman nailed two treys apiece.

With the victory over Revere, Nordonia improved its overall record to 10-9. The Lady Knights are also 7-5 in the National Division of the Suburban League.

Nordonia has three games left on its regular-season schedule. The Lady Knights will host division rival Twinsburg Feb. 8. On Feb. 11, Nordonia will travel to non-league opponent Kenston.

The Lady Knights' final game of their regular-season slate will be against league nemesis Wadsworth on the road Feb. 15 at 7:30 p.m.
