AURORA -- It has been a long, hard season for coach Beau Polcen and the Nordonia wrestling team.
That trend continued when the Knights wrestled at the Suburban League Tournament Feb. 4 at Aurora.
Polcen noted the already-thin Knights were even more undermanned at Aurora.
"We're not completely healthy at this point," Polcen said. "I'm missing two of my better upperweights and have several guys banged up. It's been a bit of a struggle this season."
It didn't help matters that one of the wrestlers unavailable for the tournament was senior All-Ohioan Anthony Perrine. Although he said he felt better at the tournament, Perrine was held out due to a strained knee.
Without its main man, Nordonia slumped to 14th place in the 15-team field with 21 points. Wadsworth won the tournament and overall title in the National Conference with 284 points. Brecsksville-Broadview Heights was second with 228 points, while American Conference champion Aurora was third with 176.5 points.
Nordonia finished eighth overall in the National Conference.
The Knights were able to get two podium finishes.
At 120 pounds, Jimmy Brenneman opened with a 7-5 win in the tie-breaker over Hudson's Joe Graf, but then was pinned in 5:31 by Wadsworth's Matt McMillen.
Brenneman rebounded by pinning Tallmadge's Jake Kanatzar in 1:40 and beating Twinsburg's Brandon Callow 3-0.
In the fifth-place match, however, Brenneman dropped a 6-1 decision to Barberton's Charles Westfall.
Also taking sixth place was senior 132-pounder Tommy Masteller.
Masteller opened with a 7-3 win over Hudson's Aiden Fultz, but then lost a wild 10-9 decision to Twinsburg's Colin Trouten.
Masteller rebounded by pinning Aurora's Mark Howard in 1:#3 and second a 7-5 win in the sudden victory period over Stow-Munroe Falls' Logan Hawk.
In the fifth-place match, however, Masteller lost 8-0 to Cuyahoga Falls' Austin Rohrer.
"I modified my expectations back in the early part of the season," Polcen said. "We've got a lot to work on."
Nordonia's regular season is over. The Knights will open the postseason at the Division I sectional tournament at Brecksville Feb. 25 at 10a.m.
