With Mother Nature not cooperating very much and the postseason tournament on the horizon, the Nordonia High School softball team split a pair of games recently.

The Lady Knights faced Suburban League National Conference rival Twinsburg on the road May 2. The Lady Tigers topped Nordonia by the score of 8-6.

On May 3, Nordonia then edged conference counterpart North Royalton on the road by a 2-1 margin in 12 innings. Grace Barth put forth a Herculean effort on the pitching mound for Nordonia. She threw a complete game, going the distance to register the win.

According to Nordonia head coach Rita Colvin, the Lady Knights have continued to improve as the season has progressed. She indicated that they've done so in all three phases of the game -- pitching, offense and defense.

"The girls are starting to become more confident in their abilities each day," said Colvin. "Offensively, they've been even more aggressive on the bases and at the plate. Defensively, they've been making some spectacular plays."

With that split of games, Nordonia's overall record remained at the .500 level. The Lady Knights are now 10-10. They also own a mark of 7-4 within the National Conference.

On May 8, Nordonia battled conference nemesis Wadsworth. On May 9, the Lady Knights were set to play the first round of the sectional/district tournament, hosting Akron East. Results of these contest were not available at press time.

On May 11, Nordonia is scheduled to play a make-up game against North Royalton on the road at 4:30 p.m.

One of the things that has impressed Colvin about this year's edition of the team is its "never say die" attitude. No matter what the score, the Lady Knights never feel as though they're out of contention.

"We've had so many come-from-behind wins this season, and it's been really exciting," said Colvin. "Never say never with this team."
